When an environment has become barren because of surface erosion, or because of altered land use and there is a desire to return the area to fit with it’s surroundings, then an environmental reinstatement project is the obvious course.
The objective is to modify the site in order to get the ground condition right, so that with suitable mulch and seed additions, the proliferation of native flora is encouraged.
Often included within this type of project is the re-profiling of edges where there has been erosion or extraction, in order to halt surface erosion. After re-profiling, what available vegetation there is can then be ‘keyed on’ to the earth or peat to encourage it to spread.
Sometimes the major factor in reinstatement is to make the ground retain more water so that mosses can take hold. DMS have a number of specialist techniques that when used appropriately, enable native mosses and other flora to establish.
With several years experience of this type of project DMS are now established specialists at environmental reinstatement and recreating wet mire areas, dwarf shrub heath, and heather moorland.
